Germany gives EUR 250,000 to support UXO Lao operations in Luangprabang province
German Ambassador to the Lao PDR, Dr. Peter Wienand, signed on 5 August, 2010 an agreement on grant assistance with UNDP Resident Representative, Ms. Sonam Yangchen Rana. The event was witnessed by Director of the National Regulatory Authority for Unexploded Ordnance and Mine Action Sector in the Lao PDR, Mr. Phoukhieo CHANTHASOMBOUN, and officials of parties concerned.
"This will help not only save lives and increase human wellbeing, but also preserve the area around the UNESCO's World Heritage listed towns of Luangprabang province and thus contribute to tourism development in the city," said Ms. Sonam Yangchen Rana. Germany is the one of the leading donors to the UXO Lao programme. Since 1998 the German Government has provided US$ 2,5 million for the programme to fund its UXO resolution. As a result, almost 2,000 hectares of land have been cleared from UXOs and approximately 356,000 people have benefited from mine risk education activities.
